Washington Mass Timber Accelerator (MASSTAC) is working to make Washington a leader in low-carbon, high quality construction through increased utilization of locally manufactured mass timber.
With representation from Indigenous communities, government agencies, private industry, labor organizations, and forestry, we are the central hub of mass timber activity in the State of Washington.
Our Mission
Accelerate the adoption of mass timber to deliver construction solutions that advance equity, environmental health, and economic opportunity in Washington and beyond.
Our Vision
We envision a future where mass timber is a standard in construction and a catalyst for advancing equity, environmental health, and regional economic resilience.
Our Formation
Washington Mass Timber Accelerator was formed in 2024, having evolved from the Seattle Mass Timber Incubator Initiative spearheaded by the City of Seattle’s Office of Economic Development in 2022.
The goal of this initiative was to explore how the City of Seattle could support mass timber as a new growth industry with potential to reduce carbon outputs, bridge the economic gap between rural and urban economies, and benefit communities that historically have been excluded from job and business opportunities. They envisioned a nonprofit organization with whom the City could partner.
Through conversations with essential and interested community members, it was determined that the best way to support increased mass timber manufacturing and construction would be through a statewide effort, encompassing the market, the supply chain, and the forests. With funding from the City of Seattle and Washington State Department of Commerce, Washington Mass Timber Accelerator was born.
Our Guiding Principles
Support the entire mass timber ecosystem. Our initiatives accelerate market adoption, while supporting sustainable industry growth in the region.
Practice long-term thinking. We are committed to creating a future that will sustain many generations to come. We prioritize the long-term health and resilience of both the natural and built environment.
Ensure the benefits of mass timber are accessible to all communities. While only a small group may be working to advance the use of mass timber, invite all to participate in this movement and listen to all voices. Prioritize job opportunities and economic growth for underserved communities.
Make it easy to build with mass timber. With so much expected from the building sector, make it easy for public and private developers to choose mass timber.
Provide a model. Set an example for well-coordinated, regional climate action and built environment transformation.
