By collaborating across the State of Washington and the mass timber ecosystem, the Washington Mass Timber Accelerator (MASSTAC) aims to position the state as a leader in mass timber research, design, manufacturing, and construction.

We are a central hub for resources, information, funding, and strategy, dedicated to ensuring the mass timber ecosystem grows together for maximum impact.

What We Do

We are the central hub for mass timber activity in Washington. Our ecosystem of supporters works to grow the market for mass timber through:

Industry Promotion

Raise awareness of mass timber as a sustainable and efficient building material, highlighting the abundant forest resources, and the design and manufacturing leadership of Washington businesses.

Code Proposals

Spearhead the development of building code proposals that facilitate the use of mass timber in construction.

Strategic Initiatives

Strategic initiatives to address the key barriers to mainstream adoption of mass timber in construction: cost premium, learning curve, insurance availability, carbon accounting, supply stalemate, and market confidence.

focus areas

We are growing the market with a sharp focus on:

Housing

Washington and the nation are in urgent need of housing, and mass timber has the potential to swiftly and sustainably deliver beautiful, durable homes at all scales, from detached homes in rural areas to skyscrapers in densely populated cities.

Schools

Washington needs new and modernized K–12 school facilities. The state can meet this demand by establishing mass timber as a preferred structural system for school construction, thereby reducing carbon emissions, supporting rural economies, and improving student well-being and performance.

Manufacturing

Supporting Washington’s mass timber manufacturers in establishing and maintaining a position as global leaders in the delivery of the highest quality, and most sustainable mass timber.
